Mentors help young people achieve their dreams

Angela is one of 39 children and young people who receive the personal support of a mentor or tutor in our Guardian Angel programme. The majority of these children need support because they live in a children’s home, though 20% live in foster families and 15% are in families with social or economic needs. With her mentor’s help, Angela is getting higher grades in college then she ever thought possible and is reaching for new personal goals, such as going to the gym. Her mentor has noticed that Angela has become more motivated to do well in her studies, more confident and mature, and they have developed a wonderful friendship.

Angela is 18 and studying at the College of Fashion Industry. She lives with her Grandmother, who has some health problems, and her older sister. Angela needed support with career guidance, and to have a person nearby who could take an interest in her studies and personal development. Angela has been mentored by Maria for over a year now.

We asked Angela to tell us about mentoring:

"Mentoring has helped me to understand and plan what I want to do in life, which is to be a fashion designer. The mentor motivates me to achieve my goals, whether it is to sew a costume or to run a marathon! Maria also inspired me when I sewed a corset as part of my coursework, for which I received 4 +. At first this grade seemed incredible, as everyone in my group thought the tutor never gave grades of 4 or above. My mentor believed in me and said try it! Maria also helps me and supports me in personal matters, for example, she offered to go to the gym with me. I tell my mentor everything and she always supports me, whether I had a bad school assessment, or I quarreled with a friend."

Is there a moment from mentoring that stands out?

"I had a dream to sew underwear. When meeting to sew a dress, Maria offered to advise me on how to sew a corset. And we did it! I was very happy."

What has changed in a year?

"I've grown more mature, balanced, analyzing my thoughts."

What do you like most about your mentor?

“She's my friend. Whatever happens, there is no judgment. She's a kindred soul and we're very similar. And I like her straightforwardness, frankness, when she says everything as it is.”

Angela's mentor says:

I am very happy with this experience. I was nervous at first whether I could give Angela what she needed, and whether it was even possible to make a difference by mentoring. When I first met Angela, she seemed so inspired, interesting and purposeful. But everyone needs someone who will accept them as they are and support them in the world around them. I have gotten to know and support Angela well, and I realize how important this is to me. Although I didn't expect it, I find I happily look forward to every meeting and news of how she is progressing. Angela has become a friend.

Our goal at Care in Action is to see more previously disadvantaged children grow up to succeed in life. We are delighted that our Guardian Angel programme can help children and young people like Angela to develop better opportunities for the future.
