In Malawi, our work continues to change lives through education. Our main focus is on sponsoring 46 students and supporting 2 community projects. Although our activities in Malawi account for less than 10% of Care in Action’s overall work, our support makes a significant difference in one of the world’s poorest countries. In November, Director Jasmine Lehnis worked in Malawi, meeting sponsored students and strengthening cooperation with our local partners.
Highlights from 2025:
Why Malawi?
Only a third of children in Malawi finish primary school, as they face so many challenges in one of the world's poorest countries. Care in Action has specialist expertise in Malawi, as Jasmine lived there for 15 years until 2016. Care in Action also has connections with Stadema Stiftung, who had funds available for Africa. The strong relationships and local knowledge Jasmine developed, together with funding from Stadema Stiftung, form the foundation of Care in Action’s aid in Malawi.
“It is very special to see the nursery school I built in 2004 full of children and so well cared for. Built on a tea estate, it provides an essential service – young children are cared for, and older siblings are able to attend school while their mothers work or pick tea. The tea estate has now taken responsibility for the nursery school. Care in Action has helped with building maintenance and funds afternoon classes that help children succeed in primary school.” - Jasmine Lehnis
Bloomfield is also one of our partners in funding secondary education. During her visit, Jasmine met the seven boys we sponsor in Mulanje who were at risk of being excluded from school because their families could not afford the fees. One is Chipiliro, aged 17, who is responsible for his two younger siblings. He earns money through manual work such as digging fields, but loves studying science and dreams of becoming a doctor so he can help others.
Care in Action’s support throughout secondary school has enabled students from very challenging backgrounds to progress all the way to university. Jasmine attended the graduation of Kondwani Zundu, marking a proud moment as he completed his studies at the prestigious Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Kondwani is resourceful and motivated – alongside his studies he has run a small business, is involved in tea research, and is now seeking employment to put his advanced skills to use.
For the first time, Care in Action has sponsored vocational training, helping young people gain practical skills to become self-employed. Tamandani and Aron studied tailoring, while Louis studied IT at the Green Malata entrepreneurial training village. Steven is studying IT at Aida Chilembwe Community Technical College.
All four students are enthusiastic about starting their own small businesses. Louis, for example, plans to start a printing service, to help students and others with document processing and printing. Louis lost his mother as a child and was then cared for by his aunt. With his own business Louis hopes for financial independence and to help his community.
Thanks to funding from Stadema Stiftung, Care in Action can cover the fees and living costs so existing students can continue their education. This means that in 2026 five students will complete their Bachelor degrees!
