Please take a moment with us to reflect on the anniversary of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Like us, it has probably touched your life in some way. Children we help have experienced bombs falling nearby, which claimed the lives of parents, siblings and neighbours. We find hope as we support their recovery and see their smiles. Our team has brothers, fathers and friends defending their country. Throughout these hard times your support has brought vital aid, shelter and care.
“Thank you so much for giving us a possibility to stand by families and children who have suffered from the war. Two years passed since the full-scale Russian invasion and Ukrainian people continue to live in constant stress, lives continue to be ruined, a sense of security to fade away. This is when external support helps to rebuild hope, physical and mental safety and stability. And we are extremely grateful for providing this vital support.” – Maria Boiko, Head of our team in Ukraine
Let’s listen to children’s stories to see why help is needed, and that it’s possible to lend a hand and give vital support:
Popasna is now 96% destroyed. Mykola & Yuliya haven’t spoken to their parents for months. Russian soldiers didn’t let their parents leave and took away their passports. After that, Russia started forcefully deporting Ukrainians from Popasna deeper into Russian-held territory. We are giving Yuliya and Mykola aid and our social support for over a year now and are inspired by their resilience.
“Our newest family fled from Bakhmut – one of the most active war zones. They have seen numerous deaths of people, animals and a complete destruction of their city. Right before the family was contacted by us, their bank cards were frozen and they were left without money even for food. Since we helped them they've been doing better.
“It's heartbreaking to see a family that had worked their whole life, established a house, started their own farm, were living a happy life and now lost everything. We hope that with our help they will be able to find better accommodation. Also, with funds for children with special needs, we will be able to look into medical, educational and developmental needs of Maxym and help him grow to his full potential.” – Sofia Furtak Perdomo
“The war has changed our lives as well as the lives of all people from Southern Ukraine. My family lived in Kherson, we experienced living under Russian occupation and in April 2022 I moved to Lviv with my 5-year-old disabled son Danylo. At that time he stopped talking and his condition was regressing. On top of it all, I was in the process of getting divorced. I was deeply depressed, overwhelmed by a sense of loss and being at a dead end.
“Thanks to Care in Action’s social support and attending their Creative Hub, Danylo was able to partially rehabilitate from trauma caused by the war, develop new skills and learn to communicate more confidently. I got emotional support from art-therapy at the Hub. The holistic support provided helped me to get back on my feet and I have created my CV and started to look for a job. Besides, with the help of your social worker I received additional support from partner NGOs, including financial support, and took an excellent course on Effective Rehabilitation. Thank you for everything you did for my family!” - Liudmyla, from Kherson
