We are happy to report that our Creative Hub, opened on June 1st, is serving children and parents who have lost their homes in the war. The child-friendly spaces and range of activities give children who are living in hostels and halls (with 80 people sleeping in one hall) a chance to play, enjoy learning and adjust to life in a new city. We also offer weekly excursions where children and parents can get to know Lviv. These are important steps in rebuilding lives, and parents are making new friends and looking for work.
“My children ask me to take them to the Creative Hub every day! They play, learn and smile a lot.” – Kateryna from Donetsk

Care in Action Manager Khrystyna Vorobets explains:
“The Creative Hub works very well to promote socialization and adaptation to a new life. It is significant that after a month we see increases in a sense of enjoyment of life, self-confidence and positive conversations about future plans. Mothers discuss ideas for the children and actively look for which lessons they can sign up to. Every day new visitors appear at the Creative Hub. Most importantly, people open up, voice their needs and the adults look for work.”
The war still impacts daily life in Lviv even though it is relatively safe. Long-range missiles targeted at infrastructure, such as electricity and rail, and air-raid sirens are a regular occurrence. Recently a missile that was shot down just outside the city scattered shrapnel in our staff member’s family garden. Luckily none of them were standing outside when it hit.
There is a great need to help people who are displaced to rebuild their lives in a new place as they cannot return home. From the interviews with mothers staying at our hostels, you can see some of the trauma they have been through to escape the conflict zones. We are aligned with the UNICEF policies to encourage integration with the local community and cooperation to solve the issues of housing and work. We are also keen to support Lviv City’s goal of reopening schools by finding alternative places for displaced people to stay, and already found additional spaces available in hostels.
To all at Munich International School who have donated, organised Walkathons and supported Care in Action: thank you for raising the funds to open the Creative Hub from June to August!
“We are very grateful for your care!” - Oleksandr from Donetsk
